VPN pricing is deliberately confusing: the headline discount applies to the longest plan, the cheapest plan renews at several times the introductory rate, and every provider advertises a different number of "free months". The only number that matters is the total cost over the period you will actually keep the subscription.

Compare total cost, not monthly price

Take the full term, add the renewal price for the following term, and divide by the number of months you expect to stay. A two-year plan at a deep discount that renews at four times the rate is not cheaper than a one-year plan with a smaller discount.

What the price differences actually buy

Server count and locations — matters for streaming libraries and for latency in your own region.
Simultaneous devices — some providers allow unlimited devices, others cap at five or six. For a household this is the deciding feature.
Audits — an independent no-logs audit is real evidence; a marketing page saying "we do not log" is not.
Protocol quality — proprietary protocols generally reconnect faster on mobile networks.
Support — live chat that answers at 2 a.m. is a paid feature in practice.

Separate the two blockers

Before paying anything, confirm two things that no discount fixes:

Does it unblock what you need? Streaming and banking apps aggressively block datacentre IP ranges. Test with the free tier or the refund window, not after paying for two years.
Does it work on your devices? Router support, smart TV apps and browser extensions vary. A provider that is excellent on desktop may be unusable on your TV.

The refund window is the real trial

Most reputable providers offer 30 days. Use it: run the service through your actual daily routine for a week — mobile hotspot switching, streaming in the evening, banking app access. If it fails any of those, request the refund inside the window rather than arguing with support afterwards.

Renewal price for the following term, in writing.
Number of simultaneous connections.
Refund window length and how to claim it.
Jurisdiction of the company.
Whether the discount applies to the tier you need, not just the cheapest tier.
