Semrush vs Ahrefs: Which One Do You Actually Need?
One is a suite, one is a data set

Semrush and Ahrefs are the two most common SEO subscriptions, and most buying advice gets the trade-off backwards. They are not two versions of the same product; they are two different products that overlap.
What each one is actually strongest at
- Semrush is a suite. Organic research, PPC intelligence, site audits, position tracking, content templates, local listings and a social tool live in one subscription with one login.
- Ahrefs is a data set with focused interfaces on top. Backlink index quality, crawl freshness and keyword data are the core; everything else orbits that.
Where the practical differences show up
| Task | Semrush | Ahrefs |
|---|---|---|
| Competitor paid-search research | Strong — dedicated ad research | Limited |
| Backlink index depth and freshness | Good | Strong |
| Content briefs and templates | Strong | Basic |
| Site audit | Strong | Strong |
| Entry price for a single site | Mid | Lower starter tier |
| Local SEO / listings management | Strong | Limited |
Which one to pick
Choose Semrush if your work spans organic and paid, if you produce content at volume and want briefs generated inside the tool, or if several people with different specialisms share one subscription. The breadth is the point.
Choose Ahrefs if link acquisition and competitor backlink analysis are central, if you mainly run one or two sites, or if you value a lower entry price over toolcount.
The uncomfortable answer
Most agencies end up paying for both and using one. If that is a possibility, start with the one matching your primary workflow, commit to a shorter billing cycle, and track how often you open the other. If you open it more than twice a month, the second subscription is cheaper than the workaround.
Before subscribing to either
- Match the plan to the number of projects you actually manage, not the number you plan to.
- Check the seat limits. Both charge meaningfully for additional users.
- Use the trial to run one real analysis end-to-end, not to click through the dashboard.
